Gas Savings For our default calculations, we've assumed a fuel economy of 25 miles per gallon for a comparable gasoline powered car. We've also assumed Hawaii's average of $0.4244 per kilowatt-hour for residential electricity (assumed for 100% of charging) and $4.46 per gallon for gasoline. The default EV efficiency value is 3.5 miles/kWh. We've assumed $0.095 per kilowatt-hour for charging with a solar power and battery storage system, however this rate will vary by household; depending on system size, household energy use and grid offset, system purchase or lease, and what time of day your charge your EV. Please use the sliders to update the calculations based on your driving habits, vehicle, and utility cost information.
With electric vehicles on the rise, how you charge matters more than ever. This calculator shows you the difference in cost between fueling with gas, charging your EV from the grid, and charging with solar.
