CHALLENGE
Capitol Place is Honolulu’s prestigious 39-story luxury high-rise condominium and home to Pacific Honda.
SOLUTION
Sunspear Energy has completed 4 solar canopy installations on the rooftop, engineered on the 39th and 40th floor levels of the high-rise structure. Due to the building’s massive height, Sunspear had to utilize a helicopter lift to transport all large materials directly to the rooftop.
The solar energy project, now fully operational, features 87.4 kW of solar power capacity spread across 4 custom engineered solar canopy structures. In addition to generating renewable energy, the solar canopies provide shelter for the building’s rooftop HVAC equipment.
The solar canopies are engineered to endure hurricane-force winds of up to 130 mph, essential for Hawaii’s tropical climate. Equipped with 182 Qcells 480-W bifacial panels and 2 SMA Sunny Tripower_Core1 50 kW sting inverters, the structures overlook the downtown Honolulu skyline and oUers an impressive view of Hawaii’s iconic Lēʻahi (Diamond Head) state monument. Sunspear’s innovative canopy design, manufactured from hot-dipped galvanized steel and engineered by Mason Architects, reduces wind pressure and blends in seamlessly with the sleek, modern lines of Capitol Place while meeting historic code requirements.
BENEFITS
The solar structures deliver an estimated 145,000 kWh of power annually and offset CO2 emissions equivalent to 20 homes’ electricity use for one year.
