Challenge

Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) program was critical in kickstarting Hawaii’s shift toward clean energy through utility scale renewable power generating facilities. Most of Hawaii’s electricity generation is derived from imported fossil fuels, resulting in electricity prices often 3 times the national average.

Solution

Sunspear’s joint venture construction partner, PLS Power, completed electrical installation for one of the last few projects remaining in the Tier-3 HECO queue. There was previously a limited amount of renewable energy generating capacity on the North Shore of Oahu. This project is critical to serving the electricity needs of the circuits in the area.

Benefits

Hawaii’s embrace of clean energy is rooted in a commitment to end its historical dependence on fossil fuels, which negatively impacts the state’s economy, environment, and energy security. These utility scale projects help reduce Hawaii’s carbon footprint while also providing dozens of jobs for local electricians, engineers, tradesmen, landscapers, and construction crews.
