Challenge

Wet ‘n Wild Hawaii is one of Oahu’s busiest theme park attractions, and utilities (electric and water) are some of their largest operating costs. With unpredictable energy costs which continuously rise historically due to Hawaii’s dependence on fossil fuels, the park needed to take control of their electric bill.

Solution

Fortunately, the park’s operating hours are during the peak sunlight hours, making them an ideal candidate for a solar photovoltaic (PV) installation. Sunspear Energy installed a 1.3MW generating facility with 4 carport structures in the park’s main parking lot, which will provide enough power to cover 100% of the electricity needs of the park during the hours it is open.

Benefits

Sunspear’s system will generate 2,150,000 kilowatt hours of clean energy per year, offsetting 65% of the park’s overall electricity use. The park’s electric bill will lower by an estimated $550K in the first year alone. The carport design will allow park guests to benefit from shaded parking, making their vehicles cooler upon return creating the added benefit of using less gasoline for air conditioning to cool their vehicles.
